Citibank Pilot-Testing Talking Teller Machines

OAKLAND, Calif. - Citibank has installed five "talking" automated teller machines for a pilot test promised to the California Council of the Blind.Users will hear the on-screen information through headsets to ensure privacy.

Under a July accord, after a six-month pilot test Citi must renegotiate to try to reach a longer-term agreement on providing talking ATMs.

The five machines installed so far are in Berkeley, San Francisco, San Carlos, and Los Angeles, according to Saperstein, Goldstein, Demchak & Baller, the Oakland-based law firm that represented the blind community during negotiations with Citibank.


Self-Serve Check Cashers For Texaco, Shell Stations

SAN FRANCISCO - Innoventry, a San Francisco-based manufacturer of self-service check-cashing machines, has signed a deal to install 27 of its new Rapid Pay Machines in Texaco and Shell retail outlets in the Southwest.Most of the machines, which use face recognition technology and target the unbanked, will be installed in Houston and Phoenix - two markets the company plans to penetrate heavily by yearend 2000. The installations are expected by mid-February.
