In Brief: Vail Banks Taps an Adviser to Be Its CEO

Vail Banks Inc. of Colorado has hired John R. Spruill, the former chief financial officer at CNB Bancshares of Evansville, Ind., to be its chief executive officer.

Mr. Spruill succeeds Lisa M. Dillon, who will become vice chairman. He has a home in the Vail Valley and has been an adviser to Vail Banks for six months.

"I have led this organization in both policy and operating areas for the past 12 years," Ms. Dillon said. "This job has simply grown beyond what a single executive should attempt."

Vail Banks is the $475 million-asset parent of WestStar Bank, which operates branches in 20 Colorado communities, including Vail, Aspen and Telluride. This month it closed a deal for United Valley Bank of Estes Park, Colo.

Mr. Spruill had been executive vice president and chief financial officer at CNB, which was sold last year to Fifth Third Bancorp of Cincinnati. Previously he was chief financial officer at Southern National Corp. of Winston-Salem, N.C., which merged with BB&T Corp. in 1995.
