In Brief: Welcome Real-time Files Patent Suit

AIX EN PROVENCE, FRANCE - Welcome Real-time, a smart card loyalty system developer, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the Australian company Catuity Group.

The suit, brought in Australia, involves patents for delivering, storing, and processing frequent-shopper incentives. It seeks unspecified damages and a restraining order.

Welcome Real-time also announced that its electronic coupon technology will be integrated into WearLogic's electronic wallet.

WearLogic, of Wakefield, Mass., has developed a screen/keyboard that can be embedded in standard leather wallets, which allows consumers to view e-coupons stored on a smart card. The card can be removed and used at merchant locations.

WearLogic has developed a flexible computer that enables personal digital assistants and PDA-like devices to be embedded in accessories such as wallets, belts, and watches.

"The most natural place to put your smart card is in your wallet, which is also the most natural place to find a screen that displays all the contents of your card," said Aneace Haddad, president and chief executive officer of Welcome Real-time.
