Indian Bank Buys 1,000 ATMs

State Bank of India has purchased 1,000 automated teller machines from Wincor Nixdorf AG.

The Paderborn, Germany, ATM maker said this month that the Mumbai company's order includes its multifunction machines and its basic, cash-dispensing models.

"A third of the ATMs have been installed, and the remaining two-thirds will be installed in two months," said Ulrich Nolte, a Wincor Nixdorf spokesman.

State Bank of India operates a network of 12,000 to 15,000 ATMs, but has said it is planning to expand the network to 25,000 machines by 2010.

It recently ordered 1,750 ATMs, including machines designed to operate specifically in India's climate, from Wincor Nixdorf's rival Diebold Inc.
