Japanese Bank Will Offer Amex Products

American Express Co. said that Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos of Tokyo will issue credit cards on its network.

The companies plan to develop products targeting affluent customers and executives in their 30s, Amex said last week.

The Tokyo bank expects to begin issuing Amex's Gold and Platinum cards next spring, Amex said.

Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos, which has about 28 million cardholders, said its research shows that 64% of people who want a premier card prefer the Amex brand.

Yoshiki Hama, senior managing officer and executive officer for business planning and development at Mitsubishi UFJ Nicos, said in an Amex press release that "we expect that American Express-branded cards will help us attract new customers, which we could not reach with our current product offerings."
