Teller-Window Scanning To Obviate Batch Proofing

To the Editor:

The trend toward teller-station scanning is clearly strengthening, as you point out ["Scanning at Teller Windows: Small Banks Get into the Act," Dec. 7], but one of the major advantages is often overlooked.

Many commercial banks operate on a proof-of-deposit basis, because it eliminates the need to sum and prove large commercial deposits at the teller window. This operating philosophy adds efficiency at the teller line but negatively affects funds availability for the customer and adds back-office expense for the bank.

As scanning technology evolves and becomes more affordable, it will soon be possible to scan and prove large check batches at the branch using optical character recognition. This will ultimately negate the need for batch processing under the proof-of-deposit philosophy. That, in turn, will dramatically change the core processing landscape by enabling any institution to process in real time.
