She is to assume the role Wednesday.

Before joining the Purchase, N.Y., company, DeVita was the chairman and chief executive of Citibank Canada. There, she was in charge of 5,000 employees companywide, MasterCard said Monday.

"Betty brings an impressive, deep, track record of managing bank and payment cards businesses to strong growth in different contexts and cultures," Walt Macnee, MasterCard's president of international markets, said in the release.

DeVita succeeds Kevin Stanton who earlier had been named president of the international professional services arm, MasterCard Advisors.
