MasterCard Plans to Bolster E-Commerce Heft by Buying TNS

MasterCard has agreed to buy the merchant payments unit of Transaction Network Services in Reston, Va.,a deal that would expand the e-commerce services offered by DataCash, MasterCard's payment processing subsidiary.

The financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. The acquisition would also allow MasterCard to expand DataCash throughout North America and Latin America, the Purchase, N.Y.- based credit card network said in a Nov. 6 press release.

MasterCard has been expanding DataCash's technology capabilities through a development lab, and also recently expanded its reach in sports payments.  MasterCard also recently acquired 5one Marketing to boost its analytics capabilities.

"Digital commerce continues to be a key focus for MasterCard and the industry as a whole," said Andrea Scerch, president of DataCash, in the release. "The acquisition of TNS Payment Gateway Services reflects a continued enhancement of our capabilities."
