NetSpend to Buy Procesa's Assets

The Austin prepaid card provider NetSpend Corp. agreed to acquire the assets of the Charlotte international payments provider Procesa International LLC.

NetSpend said Tuesday that it would use the assets to create an emerging-markets business unit to focus on unbanked and underbanked Hispanic consumers in the United States.

Patrick Brown, Procesa's founder and chief executive, would become NetSpend's executive vice president for emerging markets and would head the new unit.

Procesa operates a network that lets people in the United States pay bills here and buy cell-phone minutes for relatives in Mexico and Central America. It does not offer prepaid cards. Users pay $1.50 to $3 per transaction.

NetSpend plans to offer these services to its cardholders and to offer its cards in stores in Hispanic neighborhoods to attract more customers.

NetSpend did not give a price or say when the sale would close.
