Central Bank of Nigeria is considering introducing biometric cards to combat automated teller machine fraud.
Bank Gov. Mallam Sanusi Lamido announced this possibility Thursday during the institution's monetary policy committee meeting.
The bank's operations department is conducting feasibility studies and plans to submit a report to the bank's Committee of Governors.
But it is too early to say when such an initiative might occur and what might be required, a spokesman for the bank said.
Nigerian banks have refunded more than $12.8 million to cardholders affected by ATM fraud, he said.
