Close enough counts at Chesapeake Bank, at least where the 40-hour workweek is concerned. Employees who log at least 39.01 hours don't have to stick around, especially if they have family or other personal obligations to fulfill. They'll still get paid for a full 40 hours. But if it's Friday, they might not want to break away. Chesapeake's branches host "Fun Fridays," featuring employee-organized events to entertain both staff and customers.

Chesapeake, founded in 1900, operates 11 branches in southeastern Virginia, as well as a loan production office in Richmond, Va. Many employees have been with the bank a decade or more—average tenure for employees with at least one year under their belts is 10.01 years, and 26 employees (13 percent of the staff) have reached the 20-year mark. To keep the work challenging, Chesapeake offers a range of internal and external training programs. Whether employees are taking college courses, securing professional certifications or attending industry conferences, the bank often picks up the tab.
