PNC Financial Services Group Inc. is constructing a $400 million, environmentally friendly headquarters in Pittsburgh.
The bank said Monday that it expects the roughly 40-story, 800,000-square-foot building to be completed in 2015. The Tower at PNC Plaza will be PNC's largest building in Pittsburgh, where it has been headquartered for more than 150 years.
Designed by the architectural and design firm Gensler, the building will feature a double-glass facade to enhance energy efficiency and will be oriented to take advantage of natural sunlight in workspaces to reduce the use of artificial light during the day. The design team is also exploring fuel cells, solar panels, geothermal systems and other alternative power-generation sources. Additionally, the building will have plants on its roof to collect rainwater and reduce heat gain.
PNC's current headquarters building will continue to house bank offices.
