Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., protested the Senate Banking Committee's plan to increase funding for the committee's Whitewater investigation at the same time that it is reducing its overall budget.

Although the panel is being asked to cut it's overall budget by 15%, funding for the Whitewater probe is expected to rise to $950,000 - more than twice the $400,000 spent last year.

Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato of New York told Sen. Boxer he won't be spending any unnecessary money on the probe.
