WASHINGTON -- The Resolution Trust Corp. has approved the sale of Columbia Savings and Loan, a failed Rochester, N.Y., thrift, to 10 financial institutions.

The sales brings to a close a fight for the branches between community financial institutions in upstate New York and several money-center and superregional banks.

"This was a well-sought-after institution," said Felisa Neuringer, a spokeswoman for the RTC, which received 109 bids.

The winners included units of Cleveland-based Keycorp and Syracuse-based Onbancorp; Rochester Community Savings Bank; and seven other New York community banks.
