Santander taps JPMorgan Chase exec to lead retail network

Santander Bank in Boston has recruited a banker from JPMorgan Chase to lead its retail network.

As head of the $74.2 billion-asset bank’s retail network, Colleen Canny will oversee more than 600 branches and 4,100 employees across Santander’s eight-state territory. She will also manage the bank’s portfolio of deposit, loan and investment balances for consumer and business clients, the bank said.

“Colleen has an exceptional track record for leading dynamic teams who produce strong results, while recognizing their potential and cultivating their talent,” Michael Cleary, co-president of Santander Bank and head of consumer and business banking, said in a press release late last week. “Her extensive branch management experience will be instrumental as we grow our talent and position in the marketplace and continue to deliver a positive experience for our customers.”

The U.S. subsidiary of Spain’s Banco Santander has resolved a number of regulatory matters, including improving its Community Reinvestment Act rating, and now is focused on its growth plan, CEO Scott Powell has said.

The path forward for Santander Bank involves a new branding campaign to raise its profile and a transformation of its branch network, he said. Like most other banks right now, Santander is revamping its locations from more traditional bank branches to smaller, advice-based financial centers.

Canny has almost 30 years of consumer banking and wealth management experience at JPMorgan Chase. Most recently, she was managing director and regional director of consumer banking and wealth management in Illinois and Wisconsin. She has also worked as a branch manager, district executive, market manager and regional manager for its Northeast and Midwest regions.
