Smart Bytes: Spyrus Card Reader Has a PIN Keyboard

Spyrus has introduced a smart card reader, described as the "first to feature its own keyboard for PIN entry."

Thin enough to be carried in a wallet, the device has a 10-character digital display and an adapter for connection through a computer's serial port.

Based on technology Spyrus acquired last year from a unit of Oki Electronics of Japan, the reader "makes high-assurance smart card security cost-effective for widespread use by enterprises and government," said Spyrus president Sue Pontius.

Combined with Spyrus Rosetta smart cards, the reader "reduces the cost- per-seat of high-assurance security by 80%," she said.
