In a June survey of 172 prospective banking customers, DataMotion found that nearly 70% would be more likely to conduct business with a community bank by email if they could be assured their communications were secure.

"Our research demonstrates that most people want to communicate securely with their bank, but many cannot do so," Michael Osterman, principal of Osterman Research, said in a press release. "Our research also clearly implies that to keep existing customers and win new ones, banks will need to offer secure email to their customers to handle account inquiries, loan applications and other banking services."

Nearly three quarters of respondents said they would use secure email for account inquiries, while nearly 70% said they would use it for loan applications, and 60% said they would do so for dispute resolution. A further 42% said they would use secure email for customer support. And 50% said they would use mobile devices to send secure email.

DataMotion is based in Morristown, N.J.
