Tech Bytes: Atalla, Ultradata Join To Help Credit Unions

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Atalla Corp., a provider of on-line transaction systems, has formed an alliance with Ultradata Corp. of Pleasanton, Calif.

The alliance aims to leverage Atalla's expertise in card terminals and Ultradata's software experience to create systems that credit unions can use to make branch sharing easier.

A typical transaction that would use both companies' products starts when a customer enters a credit union and swipes an automated teller machine card through a card terminal.

Next, the customer enters an appropriate personal identification number, prompting the system to forward the customer's account information to the teller who will handle the transaction.

If the customer's accounts are at a credit union other than the one operating that branch, the account information flows directly to a shared branch application.

Atalla is owned by Tandem Computers Inc., Cupertino, Calif., which sells fault-tolerant computers for transaction-intensive businesses.

Ultradata develops information systems for credit unions. It serves about 170 credit unions nationwide.
