Tech Bytes: Cell Phone/Smart Card System Wins Award

A mobile commerce system that combines smart cards with the GSM telephone standard won a Financial Times 1998 Global Telecommunications Award for most innovative mobile product.

The system was jointly developed by De La Rue Card Systems, Motorola Inc., and the British-based consulting company Logica PLC.

Motorola manufactured a GSM cellular phone with two card slots, one for a transaction card and one for the subscriber identification module, or SIM. De La Rue supplied its SIMphonIC Java-powered smart card, and Logica its m-Commerce server.
