Tech Bytes: Infowave to UseCerticom Encryption

Certicom Corp. said it has licensed its data encryption technology to Infowave Wireless Messaging Inc. for security of electronic mail and other wireless communications.

Infowave will incorporate the Certicom Security Builder in its client/server software-the first instance of Certicom's elliptic curve cryptography being implemented on a Microsoft CE operating system.

Microsoft CE-Consumer Electronics-is designed for the "small footprint" computing devices for which Certicom's encryption system also is intended.

"Next-generation portable computing requires next-generation security solutions," said Philip C. Deck, president of Certicom, which was founded in Canada and has a sales and marketing office in San Mateo. "Our technology provides handheld and laptop users with stronger security and greater interoperability than ever before possible."

Other Security Builder licensees include Tandem Computers' Atalla division and Sterling Commerce.
