Tech Bytes: Mag-Tek's New Line Reads Data on Licenses

Mag-Tek Inc., a maker of point of sale technology such as magnetic ink character recognition devices, has launched a souped- up line of check readers.

The Mini MICR offers an optional three-track magnetic stripe reader specially designed to read data off driver's licenses.

Twenty-five states now issue licenses with a magnetic stripe that records the holder's personal information for identification purposes.

Mag-Tek is marketing the three-track option, which costs an additional $25 per unit, as an extra security layer for financial institutions.

"Identification is a problem at multibranch institutions," said Lou Struett, executive vice president. "If banks could read data off a check and a driver's license, it raises the confidence factor in cashing that check."
