Tech Bytes: Middleware Vendor Wins 1st Client in Italy

New Era of Networks Inc., the middleware vendor known as Neon, said the Italian savings bank Cariplo is using its software to integrate its risk management and transaction processing systems.

The implementation of Neon's Enterprise Application Integration, or EAI, is a likely first step toward other uses.

The system breaks down barriers that prevent disparate computers from linking to one another and can ease post-merger integrations, for example.

Cariplo, formally Cassa di Risparmio delle Province Lombarde, said following further implementation in Milan it will deploy EAI in U.S., European, and Asia-Pacific offices.

"Neon's integration technology will enable us to maintain the highest standards of customer service and develop further business opportunities," said Paolo Chocchi, information systems manager for finance and risk management at Cariplo, Neon's first customer in Italy.

Cariplo merged last year with Banco Amrosiano Veneto to form Banca Intesa. The single entity will become Italy's second-largest bank at the end of 1998 when the merger is completed.
