Tech Bytes: Zenith's '97 TVs to Offer Web Capability

Zenith Electronics Corp. has announced plans to introduce televisions that will let viewers toggle between regular television programming and Web surfing or electronic mail.

The company's NetView product line, scheduled for release in 1997, will include set-top boxes and Internet-enabled televisions that include smart card slots for potential on-line purchases.

Zenith would be integrating in the television set the functions that WebTV Networks Inc., through a highly touted television attachment, is providing under the Sony and Magnavox brand names for under $400.

Zenith has joined forces with Network Computer Inc., a subsidiary of the Oracle Corp., for enabling connectivity to electronic networks.
