Ronald L. Samuels to be president and chief executive officer-designate.

Mr. Samuels, 52, succeeded as president Charles W. Cook, who will remain chief executive officer until yearend when Mr. Samuels is to assume the role. Mr. Cook, 64, is to remain chairman of Memphis-based Union Planters' Nashville affiliate after relinquishing the CEO title.

Mr. Samuels was president of First Union Bank's Nashville region. Earlier he was senior vice president and director of marketing and strategic planning at Dominion Bank of Middle Tennessee. Union Planters has $33 billion of assets.
