Also, Walt Disney Co. (DIS, $33.83, $0.83, 2.52%) reported higher earnings andsales for the third quarter, driven by double-digit growth across nearly all itssegments, and also acquired the Club Penguin online site for children.

(BOL, $62.54, - $1.39, -2.17%), clearing the way for a rival bid from private-equity group WarburgPincus, according to a filing Wednesday with the Securities & ExchangeCommission. Advanced Medical Optics Chief Executive James Mazzo said in a letterfiled with the SEC and addressed to Bausch & Lomb board members that, "theunrealistic hurdles that have been uniquely imposed on Advanced Medical Optics "make clear that "you do not have any interest in providing your shareholderswith the opportunity to receive the $75 per share offer that we have proposed."
Ameristar Casinos Inc.'s (ASCA, $32.01, $0.33, 1.04%) second-quarter earningsfell 4.2%, due to a charge of $2.3 million, or 4 cents a share, related to astate income tax matter. The Las Vegas-based gaming and entertainment companyhad second-quarter earnings of $17.3 million, or 30 cents a share, compared with $18 million, or 32 cents a share, a year earlier. Ameristar said net revenue forthe quarter rose 2.7% to $253.2 million from $246.6 million a year ago.
Ashford Hospitality Trust Inc.'s (AHT, $10.25, $0.03, 0.29%) second-quarternet income rose 91% to $21.1 million from $11 million in the year-ago period, asrevenue more than tripled. The company's per-share earnings fell to 13 centsfrom 15 cents, as the company's share count nearly doubled. The Dallas realestate investment trust's revenue grew to $350.3 million from $114.8 million.
Atmel Corp.'s (ATML, $5.30, - $0.09, -1.67%) second-quarter net income declinedto $700,000, or less than 1 cent a share, from a year-earlier profit of $8.3million, or 2 cents a share. The San Jose electronic components maker's revenuedeclined nearly 6% to $404.2 million, from $429.5 million in the year-earlierperiod.
Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp.'s (BGFV, $21.34, - $0.03, -0.14%) second-quarter netincome fell to $5.94 million, or 26 cents a share, from $7.43 million, or 33cents a share, a year earlier, hurt in part by lower same-store sales. The California sporting goods retailer's sales rose 2.9% to $217.8 million from $211.8 million a year ago.
Business software maker CA Inc. (CA, $25.14, $0.06, 0.24%) reported net incomeof $129 million, or 24 cents a share, up from $35 million, or 6 cents a share, ayear ago. Revenue rose 8% to $1 billion. Looking ahead, CA lifted the high endof its fiscal 2008 per-share forecast to a range of 75 cents to 81 cents, upfrom a previous target of 75 cents to 79 cents.
Callaway Golf (ELY, $16.67, $0.44, 2.71%) reported second-quarter net earningsof $36.6 million, or 53 cents a share, up 63% from $22.5 million, or 33 cents ashare, during the year-ago period. The Carlsbad, Calif.-based company saidrevenue for the three months ended June 30 rose to $380 million from $341.8million.
Chemed Corp.'s (CHE, $63.32, $0.04, 0.06%) second-quarter net income fell 27%to $9.43 million, or 38 cents a share, from $12.8 million, or 48 cents a share,a year earlier. Excluding early extinguishments of debt and other items, incomefrom continuing operations was 79 cents a share. The Cincinnati provider of end-of-life care as well as plumbing and drain-cleaning services said sales for itsRoto-Rooter unit rose to $86 million from $78 million a year ago, while revenueat its Vitas unit was $186 million. Total revenue rose to $271.4 million from $249.1 million.
Eastman Kodak Co. (EK, $25.55, $0.30, 1.19%) swung to a second-quarter profit,boosted by lower costs, a $31 million increase in traditional earnings and a $97million increase in digital earnings.
Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS, $48.10, - $0.54, -1.11%) saw net losses grow forthe June quarter while revenue slipped due to a change in the company'saccounting for revenue from some of its video game titles.
Furniture Brands International Inc.'s (FBN, $11.09, $0.07, 0.64%) second-quarter net income fell 66% to $5.81 million, or 12 cents a share, from $17million, or 35 cents a share, a year earlier. The St. Louis residentialfurniture company said sales fell 11% to $535.2 million from $601.3 million.
Helix Energy Solutions Group Inc. (HLX, $38.68, - $0.27, -0.69%) said second-quarter earnings fell to $57.7 million, or 61 cents a share, from $69.1 million,or 83 cents a share, as revenue climbed 35% to $410.6 million from $305 million.
Getty Images Inc.'s (GYI, $44.84, - $0.09, -0.20%) second-quarter net incomegrew 45% to $33.7 million, or 56 cents a share, from a year-earlier profit of $23.2 million, or 37 cents a share. Excluding professional fees of 1 cent ashare, income was 57 cents a share in the recent period, compared with 59 centsa share in the year-earlier period excluding restructuring and other items. The Seattle-based visual content distributor's revenue grew 6.5% to nearly $218million, from $204.6 million in the year-earlier period. Deutsche Bank cut itsrating on the stock to sell from hold.
GlobalSantaFe Corp.'s (GSF, $70.30, - $1.41, -1.97%) second-quarter net incomerose 48% to $369.8 million, or $1.60 a share, from $248.5 million, or $1.01 ashare, a year earlier, as revenue grew 39%. The Houston offshore drillingcontractor's revenue rose to $1.07 billion from $773.4 million in the year-agoperiod.
Invitrogen Corp.'s (IVGN, $71.06, - $0.74, -1.03%) second-quarter earnings morethan doubled, boosted by the timing of BioProduction orders and positivecurrency benefits. The San Diego biotechnology company had second-quarterearnings of $40.8 million, or 86 cents a share, compared with $19.7 million, or 36 cents a share, a year earlier. Invitrogen said revenue for the quarter rose13% to $321.7 million from $285.4 million a year ago.
Leapfrog Enterprises Inc.'s (LF, $9.30, $0.26, 2.88%) second-quarter losswidened to $28 million, or 44 cents a share, from $25.7 million, or 41 cents ashare, a year earlier. The Emeryville, Calif., educational products company'snet sales fell 18% to $56 million from $68.1 million in the year-ago period.
Electronic parts maker Molex Inc. (MOLX, $28.00, - $0.34, -1.20%) said netincome for its June quarter fell to $32.7 million, or 18 cents a share, from $70.5 million, or 38 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Sales rose 1% to $791.8 million. Earnings in the most recent quarter, its fiscal fourth quarter,included $36.9 million in charges, or 16 cents a share, from a restructuringprogram. Molex raised its quarterly cash dividend 50% to 11.25 cents.
Nabi Biopharmaceuticals's (NABI, $4.40, $0.14, 3.29%) second-quarter lossnarrowed to $4.78 million, or 8 cents a share, from $14.8 million, or 24 cents ashare, a year earlier, as revenue rose 2.4%. The Boca Raton, Fla., company'srevenue to $20.9 million from $20.4 million in the year-ago period.
Online music provider Napster Inc. (NAPS, $2.87, $0.08, 2.87%) posted anarrowed loss for its first-quarter ended June 30. Los Angeles-based Napstersaid its net loss for the quarter was $4.24 million, or 10 cents a share,compared to $9.82 million, or 23 cents a share in the period a year earlier.Revenue meanwhile rose 15% to $32.25 million.
National Financial Partners Corp.'s (NFP, $47.61, $1.25, 2.70%) second-quarternet income increased 32% to $18.1 million, or 45 cents a share, from $13.7million, or 34 cents a share, a year earlier, boosted by revenue from acquiredfirms and lower management fee expenses. The New York-based financial servicescompany's revenue rose 8% to $283 million from $262.3 million in the year-agoperiod.
Nationwide Financial Services Inc.'s (NFS, $56.69, - $0.22, -0.39%) second-quarter earnings fell to $197.3 million, or $1.37 a share, from $262.7 million,or $1.75 a share, a year earlier, when results were boosted by tax reserves andrelated adjustments. Operating earnings excluding certain items were $1.12 ashare, up from 95 cents a year ago. The Columbus, Ohio insurance and financialservices company's revenue increased 3.3% to $1.17 billion from $1.14 billion ayear ago.
Nationwide Health Properties Inc. (NHP, $24.55, $0.72, 3.02%) said its second-quarter net income rose to $87.4 million, or 93 cents a share, from a year-earlier profit of $23 million, or 26 cents a share. The real estate investmenttrust said its quarterly funds from operations rose to 51 cents a share from 48cents a share. Revenue rose to $80.8 million from $59.3 million.
Nokia Corp. (NOK, $28.41, - $0.23, -0.80%), the world's largest mobile phonemaker, Thursday surprised the market by more than doubling its second-quarternet profit, as it took an estimated 38% share of the global phone market.Although analysts had expected a rise in revenues through greater sales, lowerprofits were predicted as a result of its push into lower-priced emergingmarkets and costs related to the setting up of its Nokia Siemens Networks joint-venture. The Espoo, Finland-based telecommunications equipment maker, saw mobilephone shipments jump 29% to 100.8 million, resulting from a push into high-volume markets, such as India and China.
Prudential Financial (PRU, $88.00, - $0.63, -0.71%) said late Wednesday thatsecond-quarter net income came in at $835 million, or $1.80 a share, almostdouble the same period a year earlier when the insurer made $424 million, or 89cents a share. After-tax adjusted operating income was $872 million, or $1.87 ashare.
Quantum Corp.'s (QTM, $2.85, $0.02, 0.71%) fiscal first-quarter loss widenedto $22.6 million, or 11 cents a share, from $3.58 million, or 2 cents a share, ayear earlier, boosted by its acquisition of ADIC. The San Jose tape drive makersaid the acquisition reduced earnings by about 14 cents a share. Quantum'sproduct revenue for the quarter ended June 30 increased 39% to $221.7 millionfrom $159 million a year ago, the company said. Total revenue rose 32% to $245.8million from $186.6 million a year earlier.
Sirenza Microdevices Inc.'s (SMDI, $11.12, - $0.24, -2.11%) second-quarterearnings rose 33%, boosted by sales of its high-power radio frequency modulesfor HDTV light source applications and progress in China manufacturingtransition activities. The Sunnyvale, Calif., supplier of components forcommunication industry equipment had second-quarter earnings of $2.83 million,or 5 cents a share, compared with $2.12 million, or 5 cents a share, a yearearlier.
Sohu.com Inc.'s (SOHU, $33.99, $1.86, 5.79%) second-quarter net income fell20% to $5.71 million, or 15 cents a share, from $7.17 million, or 19 cents ashare, a year earlier. Excluding share-based compensation expenses, earningswere $8.1 million, or 21 cents a share. The Beijing-based Internet portal'srevenue increased 14% to $39 million from $34.1 million a year ago, which thecompany attributed to growing momentum for the Beijing 2008 Olympic games.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. (HOT, $62.27, - $0.69, -1.10%)Thursday said it expects earnings before special items of 65 cents a share forthe third quarter and about $2.78 a share for all of 2007. These forecastscompare to average analyst projections, as derived by Thomson Financial, of 63cents and $2.58 a share, respectively.
Tetra Tech Inc. (TTEK, $21.43, $0.40, 1.9%) reported third-quarter netearnings of $12.4 million, or 21 cents a share, up from $7.85 million, or 14cents a share, during the year-ago period. The Pasadena, Calif.-based providerof engineering and technical services said revenue rose to $404 million from $359.1 million. Revenue, net of subcontractor costs, was $256.3 million vs. $240.2 million.
Unum Corp. (UNM, $23.99, - $0.31, -1.3%) said that second-quarter net incomecame in at $153.5 million, or 43 cents a share, up 23% from a year earlier whenthe disability insurer made $125.2 million, or 38 cents a share. Excluding a $53million provision for reassessing past claims and other one-time items, Unumsaid income from continuing operations on an after-tax basis was $181.5 million,or 51 cents a share.
Usec Inc. (USU, $16.81, $0.02, 0.1%) swung to a second-quarter loss of $13.4million, or 15 cents a share, from a year-earlier profit of $21.6 million, or 25cents a share, hurt in part by higher electric power costs and higher purchasecosts from Russia. Viacom Inc.'s (VIA, $38, - $0.47, -1.2%) second-quarter net income dropped 1%but beat expectations amid a year-earlier tax benefit and earnings fromdiscontinued operations. Earnings surged at the company's movie business, helpedby "Shrek The Third."
Weight Watchers International Inc.'s (WTW, $48.74, $0.22, 0.5%) second-quarternet income rose slightly to $58 million, or 73 cents a share, from $57.9million, or 58 cents a share, a year earlier on the positive impact of itsMonthly Pass commitment plan in North America and strong product sales. TheWoodbury, N.Y., weight loss service company's revenue increased 20% to $386.3million from $321.1 million a year ago.
Willis Group (WSH, $40.40, - $0.19, -0.5%) said that second-quarter net incomecame in at $78 million, or 54 cents a share, up 8% from a year earlier when theinsurance broker made $72 million, or 45 cents a share. Currency fluctuationstrimmed net earnings by three cents a share, the company noted. Organic revenue,which excludes the impact of recent acquisitions and divestitures and currencymovements, grew 4% in the second quarter, Willis said.
