USAA, UPS to Offer Check Depositing

USAA Federal Savings Bank has teamed up with UPS Inc. to offer in-store check depositing services.

The service, launched Tuesday, is available at 15 UPS stores in San Antonio, where the banking company has its headquarters. The stores are independently owned and operated franchises of Mail Boxes Etc. Inc., a UPS company.

USAA plans to have the service available in more than 1,700 locations around the country by March.

The free service is handled by a UPS employee, who swipes the USAA customer's debit or ATM card, scans the check and makes the deposit.

"It's a simple, safe and very convenient way for our members to deposit a check without having to go to a local branch or without having to use a deposit slip," said spokeswoman Danielle Long.

Long said that the company is the first bank to offer such a service at a nonbank retailer.

The deal with UPS marks a more concerted focus on physical presence for USAA, which has only a handful of financial center locations across the country. The company is better known for its online and mobile banking services.
