"Groupon currently purchases [VeriFone's] equipment for retailers to use in-store to control customer redemptions," a partnership that could provide recurring revenue, Darrin Peller, an analyst at Barclays Capital, wrote in a research note Thursday after meetings with VeriFone executives.

A spokesman for VeriFone declined to comment on the note.

Peller could not immediately be reached.

Groupon's president, Rob Solomon, told Bloomberg News this week that the company was in talks with cash register makers to add tools to more easily track the use of its offers, which have daily discounts on purchases at restaurants, clothing stores and other retailers.

Bloomberg, citing an unnamed source, reported Tuesday that VeriFone was among the companies in discussions with Groupon.
