Western Union Boycott Endorsed

The Providence, R.I., city council approved a resolution endorsing a consumer boycott of the money transmitter Western Union Co.

The resolution was passed Thursday. It says the Englewood, Colo., company charges excessive fees and does not reinvest enough money in the immigrant communities where it does business.

A spokesman for Western Union said it had a "track record of supporting communities worldwide" and was "more than happy to sit down and help educate anyone on" pricing in the remittance market.

If signed by the mayor, the resolution would only be an official recommendation to boycott Western Union; it would not force the company to close its 15 agent locations in Providence.
