X9 Specs a Guide to Implementing Check 21 Law

To the Editor:

Geoffrey Griffin and Richard Crone make several interesting observations on the opportunities available to the industry through application of the Check 21 law. [Viewpoint: "Using Check 21 to Maintain Your Place in Payments World," July 9].

With Check 21's creation of a new negotiable instrument, the financial services industry should focus on the use of two standards created by X9 that support this new law. These are X9.90 - Specifications for an Image Replacement Document, and X9.37 - Specifications for Electronic Exchange of Check and Image Data. These standards, while in draft form, should be used as guidance to ensure that the electronic exchange of data will support substitute checks.

For nearly two years X9 members have been devoting their time to developing the standards that will guide implementation of Check 21. X9 hopes the efforts of these members serving on technical working groups are appreciated by the entire industry.

X9 also invites the financial industry to become involved with the continuing work of X9 in the standards development process. Readers wishing more information on Check 21 or X9 standards may contact www.x9.org.
