California's New eCrime Unit to Tackle ID Theft

California has created an eCrime Unit to investigate identity theft and other cybercrimes, Kamala Harris, the state's attorney general, announced Tuesday.

The unit has been operating since August with 20 attorneys and investigators, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Internet-based crimes often span several jurisdictions, making it unclear which law-enforcement agency should handle the investigation, Harris said at a news conference. The new unit will work with those agencies to handle the prosecutions.
