Liberal Activist Group Petitions a Senate Seat for Frank

The Progressive Campaign Change Committee, a liberal activist group, has recorded over 33,000 names on a petition backing Rep. Barney Frank for a temporary Senate seat.

"The recently-retired Massachusetts congressman, and key member of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank expressed interest earlier this month in getting a short-term appointment to fill Sen. John Kerry's seat," writes American Banker's Joe Adler. While Kerry awaits confirmation to become secretary of state, Frank, who aided in the creation of the Dodd-Frank reform law, said the idea of being involved in discussions to solve the nation's fiscal problems was appealing.

The liberal group, who backed the Senate candidacy of Elizabeth Warren, architect of the Consumer Protection Bureau, is attracting attention with their website www.appointbarneyfrank.com.

"We need someone who we are 100% confident will fight right alongside her. Barney Frank is that person. Please appoint him as our interim senator," the group said in its plea on their website to Gov. Deval Patrick who will ultimately make the decision of who fills the seat until a special election determines Kerry's successor.
