Stealing Kids' IDs is Child's Play Due to Low Risk of Detection

Children are targets of identity thieves not only because they tend to have clean credit histories, but also because it can take years for kids or their parents to discover the identity theft occurred.

In one instance, an eight-year-old girl was a repeated victim of identity thieves, starting from when she was 12 months old, NBC's Dallas-Fort Worth news site reported Wednesday. The identity security company All-Clear ID identified three suspects using the girl's Social Security number with different names, the article said.

The company's largest case involved a child whose identity was linked to $750,000 of debt.

Such crimes are hard to detect because the credit reports parents can buy typically do not show debt linked to a separate name for the same Social Security number, Jamie May, a chief investigator with All-Clear ID, told NBC.

Identity theft is particularly prevalent in Texas because of its large population of illegal immigrants that want to use Social Security numbers, the article said.
