The first round of testing ended Nov. 30 (see story).

“It was an overwhelming response” to an initial test for a new certification, Rori Ferensic, the Washington, D.C.-based trade group’s director of education and professional development, tells PaymentsSource.

Some 347 candidates applied to take the test, but some decided to wait until the next round of testing in May. Others did not show up for test appointments, and a few did not qualify for the exam.

To qualify, test-takers had to have either three years of industry experience or a year’s experience plus a high school diploma, an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, according to the association’s website.

The second round of testing is scheduled for the entire month of May at locations throughout North America, the site says. The deadline to turn in applications is April 1.

The association created the credential to raise the industry’s standards and to assure merchants that anyone who holds the certification possesses a broad knowledge of the business, the site says.

Taking the test costs $325 for association members and $425 for nonmembers.
