ABnote, SimplyTapp to Provide Host Card Emulation Payments

The card manufacturer ABnote is working with SimplyTapp, a Near Field Communication technology provider, to support Host Card Emulation tech in a jointly developed product.

Host Card Emulation, or HCE, allows phones to support NFC transactions without accessing the device's secure element, which is typically guarded by the carriers. The joint product will be based based on SimplyTapp's Agent and Applet HCE services, and will be embedded in ABNote's Visa and MasterCard certified trusted serviced service manager offering.

Google added support for HCE to Android devices last year in its "KitKat" software update, and uses HCE in its Google Wallet app.  Visa and MasterCard are also encouraging the use of HCE. Many other companies are deploying HCE, but some prefer using a secure element to protect payment information.

"Consistent with the speed of adoption of HCE by Android, then Visa and MasterCard, we are extremely excited to offer the commercial capability only a few months after beginning this [ABNote] collaboration," says Doug Yeager, CEO of SimplyTapp, in a May 13 press release.
