Absa Bank Ltd has suspended all credit card transactions for its cardholders through a bill payment website in South Africa after repeated complaints of credit card fraud.
A spokesperson for the Johannesburg, South Africa-based bank confirmed to PaymentsSource that the bank has suspended all credit card transactions through the EasyPay website in the country after receiving a number of fraud complaints from its cardholders.
EasyPay is a Web portal enabling South Africans to pay certain bills online with credit cards.
According to a news report in the Afrikaans-language daily Beeld, Absa bank halted all of its customers’ online transactions with the EasyPay website during the second week of September and lodged a complaint with local police about potential fraud.
Absa credit cardholders may continue to use the service through EasyPay’s freestanding kiosks and at partner supermarket chain stores in the country, according to the report.
Executives from EasyPay were not immediately available for comment but a notice on the site warned customers about “phishing” scams, reminding customers to be vigilant about safeguarding their card data.
The message said EasyPay users should be suspicious of fraudulent emails purporting to be from EasyPay requesting credit card details.
