ACA International yesterday confirmed the nomination of Karolyn Rubin as president of the association. Rubin is senior vice president at Bonded Collection Corp., based in Chicago, and was recognized by Collections & Credit Risk last year as one of the "Top Women in Collections." Rubin will assume the role in 2010 and become just the third woman president in the 70-year history of the association.
"When I joined the industry in 1985, I could count on one hand the number of women in leadership/executive roles," she told CCR. "That has changed. It's exciting to see that women are supporting critical processes that shape the structure of collection agencies throughout the world."
Rubin became involved with ACA about 15 years ago. After attending state and national conferences for years, quietly observing, she received an invitation to be on a leadership panel. "I immediately figured out my direction. I wanted to be actively involved in pushing the industry in the right direction," she says.
Rubin feels strongly about the need to give back to her peers and the industry. Her platform is education. "Education supports the growth of the industry," she says. "Our industry continues to evolve with changing state and federal laws so there is an ongoing need to fill a knowledge gap."
As an ACA certified instructor, she teaches collectors how to succeed; consumers about financial literacy; and creditors about third-party collections – including the laws governing collections such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Bonded Collection Corp. is her family's business. Her grandfather, Peter Rubin, started the company in 1942.
ACA International's annual convention started yesterday in Las Vegas.
