St. Paul, Minn.-based Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union members have found a new way to give to charity and agreed to donate 774,442 credit card rewards points accumulated in October, November and December valued at $15,500 to local charities.
The charities are: the Second Harvest, the Special Olympics, the Red Cross, and the Affinity Plus Foundation.
The $1.2 billion credit union created the Participation Rewards Program with the intent of awarding points to members for their overall use of the credit union’s products and services. Members earn points based upon activity within their account, member referrals, participation in certain products and services, among other options. As points are earned, members then have the ability to redeem their points for several valuable features such as increasing a certificate rate, decreasing a loan rate, skipping a loan payment, or getting a free box of checks. With 50 points as the equivalent of $1, members can donate an unlimited amount of points.
