Ringewald was one of the founders of Boku, which operates a platform that lets consumers charge goods to their cellphone bills. Boku operates in 66 countries with roughly 245 mobile carriers, Amex says.

"As the payments space becomes increasingly digital, building great software is rapidly becoming core to our products and our success," Josh Silverman, Amex's president of the U.S. consumer services business, said in a press release Sept. 18. "Erich will be instrumental in helping American Express turn ideas into innovative products and do so more quickly."

Before joining Boku, Ringewald was a general manager and vice president at Amazon.com, where he worked on the digital music website AmazonMP3.
