Advanced touch screen ATMs are getting a major boost in Spain via a BBVA pilot, while thousands of UK machines are now open to German users of the interbank girocard (a network that binds all German ATMs).
At BBVA, the bank is piloting advanced ATMs developed with design consultant Ideo. The bank had requested Ideo to help BBVA enhance its self-service strategy with an eye on making ATMs more personalized.
Ideo spoke with consumers to study how they interacted with cash machines in an effort to develop an intuitive approach, improve privacy and boost usability.
The new machines, built with NCR and Fujitsu technology, feature all operations—including PIN entry—executed on a 19-inch iPad-style screen that displays information relevant to the transaction, with cash statements and receipts handled in and out through a single slot.
To provide security, the consumer stands at a 90-degree angle to the waiting line, shielded by a panel. The pilot includes ATMs in Madrid, with plans to expand throughout Spain in the coming months, with an international rollout to follow.
In another deal, German gircoard debit card holders will now be able to withdraw cash from about 63,000 Link network cash machines in the UK. Link and girocard operator Zentraler Kreditausschuss entered into the deal through Eaps, an alliance of European debit card firms designed to enable European ATM and POL transactions. A similar deal was struck between Germany and Italy in 2009.
