Australian Retail Chain Trials PIN-Less Purchases

To speed up checkout times for small-ticket transactions, a pilot under way at Australian retail chain Coles Supermarkets is enabling holders of EMV Chip-and-PIN credit cards to make purchases without having to enter a PIN.

The retailer is conducting the test at 118 Coles Supermarket locations and at certain Officeworks outlets owned by parent Wesfarmers Ltd., a Coles customer service representative tells PaymentsSource.

During the pilot, shoppers may initiate purchases valued at less than AU$35 (US$36 or 26 euros) without having to verify the credit card transaction by entering a PIN, the representative says.

No changes in payment-terminal hardware or card readers were required for the pilot, but a slight modification to payment software was necessary to allow transactions without PINs, she says.

Coles is conducting the trial to understand better how customers react to not having to enter a PIN before rolling out the policy in each of its 750 Coles Supermarkets in Australia and at other Officeworks outlet locations, the representative says.
