Australian Territory To Roll Out MyWay Smart Card Transit Ticketing

The Australian capital territory of Canberra plans to roll out the MyWay smart card ticketing system on its Action bus service starting Feb. 21, a spokesperson at the bus operator tells PaymentsSource.

The Department of Transport Planning first conceptualized the MyWay system in 2009. To date, it has spent U$2 million (US$1.9 million or 1.4 million euros) on the system project, which Australia-based Downer EDI Engineering Power Pty Ltd. is under contract to provide.

Action first tested the system last May on a limited number of routes operated by it (see story).  The trial concluded in August, the spokesperson adds.

The operator will issue commuters new cards with contactless microchips that support electronic wallets, and commuters will hold the cards against readers as they get on and off buses to facilitate payments for their rides, according to the spokesperson.

“The fare will be deducted accordingly,” he says. “They will also be able to reload the card online via the Bpay online payment system, by phone or at an authorized MyWay reload agent.”

Single-use magnetic stripe tickets will continue to be available for casual users and tourists for the time being, and the MyWay system will retain the flat fare structure used previously, the spokesperson says.
