The Affordable Care Act's mandate for individual coverage is expected to increase the number of Americans looking to purchase health insurance and, by extension, the use of electronic bill payment systems, says ACI.

Payment technology companies predict the Affordable Care Act will open a new market as insurers and health care providers scramble to comply with the law, which is expected to increase consumer-directed health care coverage. Compliance with the act's payment rules may also raise complications.

"Health insurers like BCBSRI are singularly focused on giving their members the best overall experience, which includes quick and easy bill pay," says Eric Labiak, senior vice president of sales and marketing for ACI OnDemand, in a Nov. 12 press release. "We've developed our [electronic bill payment and presentment] technology with the end user in mind, which is why insurers continue to turn to us for their electronic bill presentment and payment needs."
