The mobile wallets offer gift cards from a range of major retailers, including Amazon, Babies R Us and JCPenney. "Customers who use these apps are saving money, paying their bills, transferring funds and can now use their extra cash stored in the apps to easily send their family or friends a gift," said Kevin McGinnis, a vice president at Pinsight Media, a division of Sprint, in a Dec. 3 press release.

Sprint launched the Boost Mobile Wallet in May, 2013 as a means to offer financial services to the underbanked. The app runs on Wipit Inc.'s mobile payment platform.

The gift card features will be available as free, downloadable updates to the digital wallets.
