Consumers now may use China UnionPay-branded credit cards in Brazil under an agreement the card organization reached late last year with Brazil-based Itaú Unibanco S.A. that took effect in late May.
Under the agreement, China UnionPay customers may use their cards to make withdrawals at Itaú Unibanco’s 300 ATMs and to shop at merchant locations within the Redecard network.
Redecard is the second largest processor in Brazil. Itaú Unibanco created it in 1996 in cooperation with Citigroup and MasterCard Worldwide.
The bank modified its entire ATM network to accommodate Chinese customers, including making screen menus in Mandarin an option, according to a UnionPay spokesperson.
