Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam will deploy biometric ATMs in the Southeast Asian country of Brunei to increase banking convenience for it customers, the financial institution announced Nov. 10.
The bank will deploy seven biometric ATMs this month from German ATM vendor Wincor Nixdorf GMBH, a bank spokesperson tells PaymentsSource, noting Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam would be the first bank in the country to deploy such machines.
The bank had been testing the ATMs for the past year, and the trial has been successfully completed, he says.
Over the next few months, the bank will deploy the ATMs across the country. It expects rural residents to find their fingerprint-authentication method easier to operate than using a PIN, the spokesperson says adds.
“A customer would access the biometric ATMs with a bankcard and then use his fingerprints instead of a password,” he says. “This would essentially be very helpful to the old and the illiterate, not to mention more secure.”
The bank expects to deploy more of the machines over the next year.
Terms of the deal with Wincor Nixdorf were not disclosed.
