Card.com Offers Line of Star Trek Prepaid Cards

Prepaid card marketer Card.com now offers a prepaid card for Star Trek fans.

The Star Trek card comes in a variety of designs, including depictions of the original series cast to ships and characters from the Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise series. The cards are under license by CBS Consumer cards and do not appear to depict scenes or characters from the Star Trek film series.

"The next generation of banking isn't tied to a brick-and-mortar institution. It’s in the palm of your hand, thanks to the smartphone. Card.com gives Star Trek fans a unique way to engage their fandom all while utilizing this forward-thinking financial service," said Ben Katz, CEO of Card.com, in a release.

Katz, the former senior director of Green Dot, founded Card.com. Its investors include Resolute Ventures, Anthem Ventures and QED Investors, the venture division of Capital One founder Nigel Morris.

The Visa-branded Star Trek prepaid cards, issued by Bancorp Bank,  have a $5.95 monthly maintenance fee (waved when $800 is loaded during the prior 30 days), a $3 withdrawal fee and $1 balance query fee.

Prepaid cards are starting to gain traction as a marketing option for banks, but the product category is often scrutinized for its fees and its culture of attaching celebrity endorsers such as the Kardashian sisters, finance guru Suze Orman and pop star Justin Bieber
