Cardtronics’ ATM Cash Withdrawals Grew 7% In 2009

Consumers made 244.4 million cash withdrawals in 2009 from Cardtronics Inc. ATMs, up 7.1% from the previous year’s 228.3 million total, according to PaymentsSource research.

At the end of last year, the Houston-based ATM independent sales organization operated a network of more than 33,400 machines in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico and Puerto Rico, 1.6% more than the 32,856 Cardtronics owned and operated a year earlier.

More ATMs last year led to more cash withdrawals, according to Cardtronics’ 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Last year, cardholders on average made 616 monthly cash withdrawals per machine, up 6.4% from 579 in 2008. Total transactions using the machines last year increased 8.2%, to 383.3 million from 354.4 million, according to PaymentsSource.
