Chase To Complete Intelligent-Deposit ATM Rollout This Spring

MIAMI–JPMorgan Chase & Co. will complete its rollout of intelligent-deposit ATMs this spring, says Brad Nolan, senior vice president of Chase ATM and cash operations.

“Some 10,000 of Chase’s 15,000 ATMs will be converted to intelligent deposit by April 15,” Nolan said at the ATM industry Association conference here. “There will be a few stragglers, but essentially we will be done.”

The remaining ATMs, 5,000 cash dispensers that do not accommodate deposits, are installed in airports and retail locations, Nolan said, adding Chase recently secured contracts to deploy machines on the airside of San Francisco International and Detroit Metro airports. Chase is deploying the machines near passenger entrance and exit gates because airline passengers arrive earlier at airports to clear security and wait longer for flights.

The area beyond security checkpoints “is becoming more competitive,” Nolan noted. “You’re now seeing a Chase ATM next to a Bank of America ATM next to another bank’s ATM.”

Once New York-based Chase completes its rollout of intelligent-deposit ATMs, it will become the second national bank to complete deployment of the envelope-free machines, which enable cardholders to insert checks and cash directly when making deposits.

BofA, the nation’s largest bank owner of ATMs with 18,500 machines nationwide, completed its rollout of intelligent-deposit machines in December. Charlotte, N.C.-based BofA has converted 13,000 ATMs to intelligent deposit. The balance are cash dispensers.

Chase, the nation’s second-largest bank owner of ATMs, buys machines from Diebold Inc., NCR Corp. and Wincor Nixdorf AG. Chase grew its ATM network just more than a year ago with its purchase of Seattle-based Washington Mutual for $1.9 billion from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. At the end of 2009, Chase operated 15,406 ATMs nationwide.

Wells Fargo & Co., the nation’s third-largest bank owner of ATMs with more than 12,000 machines, still is deploying intelligent-deposit ATMs.

Sales of intelligent-deposit ATMs to Chase, BofA and Wells helped boost revenue for ATM manufacturers NCR Corp., Wincor Nixdorf AG and Diebold Inc. NCR and Diebold executives say the completion of those rollouts will leave a void because regional and community banks have been reluctant to buy the machines in sufficient numbers.
