JPMorgan Chase & Co., which purchased Washington Mutual Inc.'s operations in September (CardLine, 10/2/2008), will rebrand 1,900 Washington Mutual ATMs throughout California with the Chase name, the company announced Tuesday.  New York-based Chase also will rebrand 708 branches as part of a $375 million investment it is making in California. Chase is scheduled to complete the rebranding in March. Chase's $1.9 billion purchase of Washington Mutual strengthens Chase's position as the second-largest bank operator of an ATM network. Before the purchase, Seattle-based Washington Mutual owned 4,962 ATMs and Chase owned 9,310 machines. Chase now operates 14,272 ATMs in 23 states, second to Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America Corp. BofA operates 18,531 ATMs in 28 states. Chase is rebranding all of Washington Mutual's ATMs by the end of 2009, but it only will rebrand ATMs and bank branches in the California market in March, a spokesperson says.
