To cater to the growing number of Chinese travelers to Japan, China UnionPay is collaborating with Japan’s tourism office to offer services and deals to UnionPay cardholders.
Among the many promotions China UnionPay will run in conjunction with the tourism office will be discounts offered in the tourist-heavy districts of Kyushu and Kansai in Japan, a UnionPay spokesperson tells PaymentsSource.
When tourists use a China UnionPay card to shop in any of the approximately 3,000 merchants in the two districts, they will get a discount of 1,000 yen (US$13 or 9.5 euros) when spending more than 10,000 yen, she says.
In addition, UnionPay will hold other unscheduled promotional activities for its cardholders and sponsor deals during the month of September, when many Chinese travelers go to Japan during the Mid Autumn festival.
“From now until the end of September, cardholders who pay by China UnionPay card will get 1% of the transaction amount as the currency-conversion fee and not the regular 2%,” the spokesperson says. “Additionally, there will be tax rebates, gifts and other discounts for UnionPay cardholders.”
UnionPay expects tens of thousands travelers to benefit from the promotion, the spokesperson says, noting 50,000 Japanese merchants accept UnionPay cards, including most department stores, shopping centers, electrical shops, drugstores, restaurants and branded stores in the cities of Fukuoka, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe.
